Davyhulme is a locality within the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, in Greater Manchester, England. Historically part of Lancashire, it is contiguous with neighbouring Urmston town. It is home to one of Europe's largest Waste water treatment works. Source: United Utilities It is considered by some to be one of the more affluent neighbourhoods west of the city of Manchester. Davyhulme is very popular with young families due to the area's high achieving primary & secondary schools and a large selection of detatched & semi-detatched houses. The nearby Trafford Centre has added a lot of value to the area, as has the ongoing re-development of Urmston town centre funded by Sainsbury's supermarkets who are opening a show case branch in the town centre. Politically it is divided into Davyhulme East and Davyhulme West electoral wards although a proportion of Urmston is included in Davyhulme East and some of the neighbouring locality of Flixton is included within Davyhulme West.
Dalbeattie In Dumfries and Galloway Is Said To Be The Birthplace Of Granite Polishing. Granite Quarrying Craignair quarry is a notable town landmark Formerly granite quarrying was an important part of the Dalbeattie economy. The most prominent of which is the characteristic Craignair quarry which is clearly visible to the west of the town. Dalbeattie Granite works was established in 1820 and was situated in Craignair Street, following a direct route from Craignair quarry. The industry died down locally around 1883 due to cheaper imports from Denmark. Many of the workers immigrated to other parts of the world in order to find work, a number immigrated to the USA to work at a sister quarry in Westerly, Rhode Island. Dalbeattie is credited with developing the technique of polishing granite stone to form a shiny surface. This technique was exported throughout the world by the skilled workers of Dalbeattie as they travelled.
